Del Maguey Arroqueno is a special limited edition of only 360 bottles made from giant semi-wild Arroqueno agave — a massive Oaxacan variety dedicated to explorer Thor Heyerdahl — roasted in a conical pit, fermented for thirty days with only airborne microbes, and twice distilled very slowly in an ancient clay still with bamboo tubing, the same production tradition as the Minero from Santa Catarina Minas.
Arroqueno (Agave americana ssp. oaxacensis) is one of the largest cultivated agave varieties used in mezcal production — a giant semi-wild plant whose corazon requires the conical pit roasting technique and produces a spirit with a distinctly different character from the more commonly used Espadin or Karwinskii agaves. The thirty-day open-air fermentation with only wild airborne microbes, followed by slow clay still distillation, produces a mezcal with luscious cantaloupe melon on the palate, a background of baking chocolate, vivid vegetal freshness of green beans, and a savory medium-to-long finish.
