Del Maguey Madrecuixe is made from wild mature Madrecuixe agave — a tall cylindrical wild Karwinskii variety that grows from the ground up rather than shedding lower leaves as it matures, requiring years of growth before it reaches production maturity, and producing one of the most elegantly tropical and green-herbal mezcals in the Del Maguey portfolio when processed in the centuries-old Oaxacan artisanal tradition.
Madrecuixe belongs to the Karwinskii family of wild agaves — related to Tobasiche and the upright cylindrical agaves that are fundamentally different in character from the rosette-shaped Espadin used for most mezcal. The plant’s mature piña produces a spirit with a distinctly different aromatic profile: green, tropical, and fresh rather than the earthier, smokier character of Espadin. Earth-roasted, fermented with only airborne microbes, and twice distilled in the original unblended Oaxacan handcrafted tradition, Madrecuixe is silky and elegant — a medium-bodied wild agave mezcal that finishes long, dry, and clean.
