Del Maguey Santo Domingo Albarradas is a single village Espadin mezcal from one of the most distinctive growing regions in the Del Maguey portfolio — the Mixe region south of Oaxaca, a high-altitude tropical zone that resembles parts of Hawaii more than the dry Oaxacan valley, producing agave with a completely different character from valley or sierra expressions.
The Mixe region sits in a semi-tropical mountain zone where tropical plants and rushing mountain streams coexist with pine trees and cool gray mists. Espiridion Morales Luis and his son Juan have been making mezcal here since the 1950s — Espiridion’s decades of experience with the specific terroir of Santo Domingo Albarradas produce a mezcal with a high, light nose of citrus and roasted pear, tropical fruit on the palate, and a clean dry finish that reflects the spectacular water and unique microclimate of the Mixe.
